the shingaling’s the thing
With Hicks’ set to headline the 2007 Niagara Wine Auction this Saturday, fans are wondering whether we’ll be able to adjust our tin foil hats well enough to penetrate the inner sanctum of this private event and get a reliable set list, or any set list. With actor/comedian/vintner Day Aykroyd hosting the event, it should be a good show.
Some interesting rehearsal footage turned up on our door step. Could the show possibly include a dance-off between Hicks and Mr. Blues himself? You tell me.
ETA: Odd. A reader was hoping to see Hicks and Aykroyd exchange harp licks, and this turns up. This needs to stop.

And all this time i managed to successfully avoid the Blues Brothers.
Did the tape show up with any word on who the band will be?
pesto - no, it came in a plain brown wrapper with no mention of band. I presume he’ll round up the usual suspects, but have no real clue. At least whoever did the vid had the good taste to cover up the AI band.
Cellcert or no, I really want/need a setlist. I think I’m getting a little obsessive about these things.
I love the Blues Brothers. Briefcase Full of Blues is a perennial favorite of mine.
love the video. All those happy feet. Fun.
Now we know where that “taking us to church” music/segment Taylor throws into some of his upbeat songs channels — James Brown!!!
Well Taylor does like to scat too

Looks like you’re onto something here.

The Blues Brothers fan also hopes to “swap some licks on harmonica” with Aykroyd this weekend.
“swapping licks on the harmonica”? Sounds vaguely unhygenic, though, ultimately more satisfying than the running man dance, I think.
… and the little vid seems to be in limbo for some reason. Maybe it really was a rehearsal vid and got pulled? Maybe new border issues?
ETA: seems the first one had a short shelf-life. Hopefully this one has legs.
New Aykroyd interview on CTV seems to confirm some fun ahead.

Look for the video link at Celebrity Corner near the bottom of the page. Nice interview about Canadian wine, the charitable work of this auction, and the show — including some nice mention of Mr. Hicks.
The Blue’s Brothers singing Otis intermingled with Taylor singing Sam - perfect! I’m glad whoever put the video together ‘got that’ part so right.
and Robin - cool - thanks for the link above, I’ll definitly check it out, Canadian wine and Taylor Hicks in the same interview - there’s hope for those of us Canucks afterall.

I hate to split this hair too terribly finely, but it’s actually The Blues Brothers doing a Sam & Dave hit, and Taylor covering Otis.
Good to see you jools. I understand the lovely guitar side banner is yours. Very cool.
And Joe, when a hair needs splitting, somebody’s got to do it.
LOVE it. Taylor’s performance with Keb on Sweet Home Chicago is awesome, and Elwood and Jake blend in seamlessly. Watching this harp exchange, it sure seems like a natural, doesn’t it? Gotta happen, and there’s gotta be television coverage.
really Joe? I thought Otis Redding was credited with writing Soul Man and that Sam Cook wrote You Send Me - I learn something new every day! thanks for setting me right.
Hicks is doing Try a Little Tenderness there.
Hayes/Porter wrote Soul Man. Sorry… I will stop now.
Keb Mo and Taylor Hicks really blow the roof off with ‘Sweet Home Chicago’. Here is a clip of Mo and Corey Harris doing the same song.

Their version is great too -together they give the song a different feel. I have to admit I like Mo and Hicks better on this one. There is much more going on — I find the music more interesting. It’s a higher energy rendition all around. I love comparing different artist’s work on the same song. It shows you how the bones of a tune are just part of the story. No matter how well you know a song it can become new again with the right artists behind it. This mixture of Mo and Hicks gave a fresh spin on a song I love and know well.
And here’s the journalistic and pictorial proof that it happened!
From the photo caption…
…Actor Dan Aykroyd performs with American Idol winner Taylor Hicks on Saturday night at the Niagara Wine Auction gala.
From the article…
…Entertainers for the night included singers Michael Burgess, Measha Brueggergosman, Matt Dusk and Taylor Hicks, the 2006 American Idol winner who had the crowd racing to the dance floor.

Well, at least we know there was a camera there! Hopefully, some more media will start to turn up in some of the usual places. Damn. I’d sure like to know what tune they did.
Thanks for the link, Robin. Great pic. Sure would like to know what song(s) Aykroyd performed with Taylor. Hoping for some video.
