something to talk about
What’s on your plate today? What’s on your mind? I’m enjoying an incredibly lazy weekend (the first in a long time). I’m feeling like I want to start this with some tunes but am realizing I just can’t force my brain into a Sunday morning mood until I’ve finished Saturday night. See you in a few. It’s an open thread, so talk about what you want.
ETA: ok, I’ve had my bagel and I’m still in a bass mood, especially after reading True’s account of Victor Wooten at the Calgary festival. Made me think of something passed to me awhile back by Robin. Here’s some smooth bass for a Sunday morning (though I could live without the audience participation on this):

Calvin Turner “stepped up” as Marc Broussard’s producer of SOS. He is also his bass player, has a Zoom Funk project and guest plays (see him at the end) on Matt Wertz’ video Carolina. He’s less bombastic and more tantric and we should be hearing a lot about him.

Hell, all I’ve got to contribute is that I’m cleaning off hard drive space so I can get more music!
I’d like to hear more from Turner. If I’m getting you, it sounds like just the kind of obstinate groove that got me thinking about doing this blog.
Speaking of which, I went off to see if there was any good Pino Palladino to share but got distracted by this:

This commercial never crossed my path for some reason, but it reminded me of some great discussions last year (or earlier this year?) at graycharles.com on commercial use of music. Relevance to this place will be obvious.
exactly! What
The Roots, Public Enemy, Cypress Hill and others were incredible at Randalls Island last night per a friend.
Your video reminded me of what I was discussing with him this morning over coffee — ?uestlove is steering the new Al Green Duet cd. Yes it’s true!
here’s a taste, have a great day

I don’t remember that commercial crossing my path either. It would be interesting to find out when/where/if it played.
I love the drummer’s doodling.
Speaking of commercials…just heard Give Up The Funk on a Honda commercial pimping ‘The van is back’, advertising their Odyssey.
Crossroads Guitar Festival M$ IE required unfortunately.

Catching up and just listened to the Marc Cohn bit you’ve provided for us. I saw him some ten(?) years ago in a small club and thought he was wonderful. I have just one CD of his, the self titled Marc Cohn, but periodically check online to see how he’s doing. I think he’s a huge talent, both as a musician and a songwriter, and I find it very disheartening that his talent is not more widely recognized. It was very nice to see him here.
This Marc Cohn Jeff Pevar clip is out of this world. Are they always this good together?? I don’t know much about Cohn’s work beyond that Memphis thing that got a lot of air play 10 years ago or so. That was good song.
