don’t make me stop loving
4o years ago this December, Otis Redding died in a plane crash at age 26. Reeling in the Years Productions and Stax Records are commemorating his death (and celebrating Stax’ 5oth anniversary) with a DVD being released tomorrow- Dreams to Remember: the Legacy of Otis Redding. A full description can be found here at All About Jazz.
Of course, those of us who have been following Taylor Hicks’ career know that Redding had an early and lasting influence on Hicks’ criminal musical life. If the DVD isn’t in your immediate plans, a nice warm up can be found in this CNN video.
Of course, this got me realizing that, despite the early influence, Hicks hasn’t done all that much Redding in recent years. On tour he’s teased a few songs, but otherwise no covers. I wonder why that is? Of course, he did Tenderness on that tv show:
That looks and sounds so strange now - the lighted stage floor, the music-as-sound-bite arrangement. It seemed odd at the time, but with the passage of time, that set-up seems almost impossible to believe, doesn’t it?

unbelievable. 26. you have got to be kidding me.
one of the more underrated performances from the TV show. the song length leaves something to be desired but aside from that, I’m feeling it.
That was s-o-o-o-o great! When I originally saw it, my attention was grabbed within the first few words were sung; then when the tempo change occurred I started to “feel” the song. By the end, I was mesmerized, standing on my feet (in my living room), and saying W-O-O-O-O!! Thanks for the memory.
I would like to see Taylor included in some of the commemorative recordings now since he is the best at performing some of these old tunes by the greats — Otis Redding, Elvin Presley, James Brown, etc.
Can you imagine Taylor performing Proud Mary?! Oh, my.
That should be ELVIS Presley.
Nice juxtapositioning of Otis and Taylor. I like the AI performanc, with its shades of things to come.
Great performance that night by Taylor. I’ve wondered why he hasn’t done more Otis on the tour also, especially after readingin his book, how early and how often he’d done TALT in his past.
I really enjoyed the video of Otis. And wow, thanks for the revisit to one of Taylor’s best moments on AI.
If you look back at his performances now without having to worry about the outcome, you realize how great he was at getting everything he could out less than 2 minutes of a song.
I don’t think anyone I know besides Taylor could get so much into such a short performance. What a voice.
