baby what you want me to do
Coming up this next week, Austin City Limits will show a tribute to blues harp legend, Jimmy Reed. If you’ve seen a Taylor Hicks concert, you know Reed’s “Big Boss Man”. If you’ve been listening longer, you’ll also know “Bright Lights, Big City” (of course, Reed has been covered by just about everybody: Elvis, Stones, Dead… - these songs are now blues standards) Show will feature James Cotton, Delbert McClinton, Jimmie Vaughan, Omar Dykes and others paying tribute to Reed.
This sounds likes it’s an outgrowth of Dykes’ and Vaughan’s recent CD project, “On the Jimmy Reed Highway”, which was covered in a September NPR story. Here’s a bit of trip with the same characters down the “Jimmy Reed Highway” in Austin in August.

Now, “delightfully nasty” is a genre I could get behind.

This sounds great! You gotta know I love that Delbert’s in the mix. And Jimmie Vaughan? Oh yeah. Off to check my local listings now.
Thanks for the reminder What - I’ve set my pvr! I enjoyed the ‘tubes’ - did you happen to catch the two-part interview with Omar in Blueswax? He was asked about his personal history with Reed’s music and referred to both songs above, saying, “Actually, I heard Jimmy Reed stuff and tried to play it before I really identified it as his music. When I was a kid, I’d go to Hinton’s Music in McComb, Mississippi, where I grew up, and grab a Telecaster off of the shelf because I didn’t even own a guitar at that time. I’d start playing “Baby What You Want Me To Do” and “Big Boss Man” because I’d heard both of those on the radio. Those songs at that time were Top 40 songs. . .
. . . I wish it was like that now. But at that time, I didn’t know who did those songs, you know, I just knew that I liked them. You know, people were always talking about Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf, and God knows I loved them, but you can’t play much of their stuff when you’re 12 years old.”
it’s a pretty interesting interview - perhaps a link in the speakeasy would be a good idea?
I did see the interview - Blueswax is my new best friend. That’s where I read the heads-up to the ACL gig. I’ll put the link to the interview right here, but you’ve got to register at Blueswax to read it:
Omar Dykes interview
I love Delberts version of “Want You Want Me to Do”. I never knew it was a cover though. Gets me in the jammin mood everytime.
I’m so glad I checked here. My DVR will be set up to catch this for sure. I didn’t know that Big Boss Man was originally Jimmy Reed’s song. I’m just learning all this blues stuff, and I really like it.
Did I miss this? I’m thinking Austin City Limits is on Friday nights. Damn. Anything Delbert is on, I don’t want to miss. Going to check now….
texastaylorfan: ACL is on Saturday nights (at least where I live).
One of my favorite stories from both Glen Clark and Delbert was the time the 20 year old Delbert brought a brand new mic to the Jimmy Reed gig he (Delbert) was playing. Jimmy vomited into the thing during the show. Delbert spent a few hours trying to clean the RCA out with a toothpick. Texans take note: Rocking the Boat is playing the Lone Star Film Festival in Ft. Worth on Saturday, Nov. 10. For details go to:
