when you say nothing at all
Help me out. I have need of a mix tape (quaint terminology, isn’t it?) of all instrumental music - no vocals. I’ve got such things in a variety of genres: folk, classical, celtic, “world”, etc, but am wanting one that is rock/blues/funk. I’ve got a start: Maggot Brain (minus the first 30 seconds), Lenny(SRV), Born Under a Bad Sign (Hendrix), Ocean(JBT), Navajo Moon (Popovic). I’ll add something from King Curtis and probably more SRV, but haven’t decided what.
What would you add? My mix is too guitar heavy right now. It needs to skew mellow (to help young brains think deep thoughts), but not too. Otherwise, go crazy, but, remember: no vocals.
Navajo Moon - Ana Popovic
Lenny - Stevie Ray Vaughan
Born Under a Bad Sign - Jimi Hendrix

Miles Davis—”Chocolate Chip”
Sorry—just caught the operative word “mellow.” Guessing mine won’t fit that description. Maybe you need to make two “mixed tapes.”
Don’t laugh, but I would have a cut by one of the greatest guitar players of all time. Chet Atkins

And here’s Chet with another great, Earl Klugh.

This one doesn’t really qualify because there is singing at the beginning and end, but I’ve always considered this an amazing instrumental. Loggins and Messina - Pathway to Glory. If you’ve never heard it, please give it a listen. (and ignore the video)

I just listened to David “Fathead” Newman’s CD called “I Remember Brother Ray”. He was Ray Charles’ tenor saxophone player for many years, and he works up Ray’s songs as jazz instrumentals. They run the gamut from swinging to mellow and all are great.
I also have listened to King Curtis’ “Live at the Filmore West” which has some fun stuff on it as well. The usual “Memphis Soul Stew” and “Soul Serenade”, but he also does a real trippy version of “Whiter Shade of Pale” and even “Whole Lotta Love”.
I’d be happy to upload some of this for you if you wish, feel free to PM me.

Well, well. Debunot! cool to see you again.
Good recommendations, people. I’m still listening (which, of course, is the gravy).
Almost forgot.

Here is one with NO guitar.
Andy Narell. I need to have my vinyl album put on a CD.
It’s the Pans Man.

Interesting. I’d never heard of Johnny A before you mentioned him, morewines, but when I popped in the car after class this evening and turned on the radio, there was this cool guitar work going on. Turns out it was Johnny A, “oh yeah”. Now, had I really never heard him before, or did it just not register minus the priming?
what,
Johnny A. is not to be missed.
There are several nice instrumentals on a cd that I have. It is Best Of Smooth Jazz, Vol 2, Under the Covers.
I really like the version of Eric Claptons, Tears In Heaven. The majority of the song is played by a tenor sax.
This album from 1986 with Palle Mikkelborg (trumpet), and Niels Henning Ørsted Pedersen (bass) has a nice version of “Imagine”..
