red sun drains the sky

“An enigmatic singer-songwriter, she has crafted a sweetly sung disc that alternately revels and weeps … a genuine triumph.”
~ Country Standard Time
This CD is often classified as belonging to the ‘Americana’ genre. I’m still confused about what exactly ‘Americana’ music is. But I’m not confused about how much I love Corinne West’s album Second Sight.
It is fresh, familiar, and warm. It sounds like roots music, bluegrass music, folk music. It is full of emotion and thoughtfulness. A very beautiful CD.

Many thanks, tandjam, for this introduction. I’m hearing Corrine West for the first time and loving what I hear. Beautiful songs.
I don’t claim to have a grasp on Americana, but I have observed that it’s generally acoustic music that doesn’t neatly fit a blues or jazz or country label. Also, instrumentation has much to do with it I think. Seems that if there’s a banjo or a dobro you’re likely to find it in Americana.
..tandjam, I love these songs! Some of them sound quite hip. I have no idea why I’m saying that, it’s just a feeling. Maybe Americana, whatever that is, is actually hip, whatever that is.
Also wanted to say THANKS in general for your recommendations here on c2what – I’ll be seeing Angie Stone in late April, and saw Cat Empire a while back with some friends, and had a great time- both concerts at a smallish venue in Copenhagen called Vega. A place I always thought would be perfect for Taylor Hicks whenever he’ll be stopping by on his European tour (!) Actually Kelly Clarkson will be playing there a couple of weeks before Angie Stone. Should one go? Am only half-joking, maybe curiosity will get the better of me, she’s a good singer. Well, so much for Americana.
I haven’t posted here in a long time…but after hearing just the first song…I gotta say, “WOW!!!!” I am so impressed with how you find these gems. I had never heard of her before.
I don’t know what Americana is either…but at the 1:56 mark, the humming sounds wonderfully like that toward the end of Joe Cocker’s performance of “Little Help From My Friends” at Woodstock. You can’t get any more “Americana” than Woodstock, can you?
Robin, thanks for clearing up my Americana confusion!
DP, what did you think of the Cat Empire show? Do tell! Like? Love? Hate?
KimLoree, glad you enjoyed Corrine West. Thanks for the comment!
Tandjam: I loved the The Cat Empire’s performance that night – in November, I think it was. They had so much fun themselves and the crowd went nuts, one big party. What I remember enjoying also, was the fact that the “persona” of the two guys in front came through in a big way: the lead singer and percussionist extrovert and flirty, and the trumpet player (and singer) laid back almost to the point of being indolent, then suddenly exploding. Such an obvious natural talent too - playful and really, really gifted. I’m a sucker for that. The band worked great together, but he stood out.
RE: The Cat Empire…
DP you said, ‘one big party’. That’s how I remember the TCE show I went to. I had a smile plastered to my face for days. I’m glad you enjoyed your show!
I also was very entertained by Harry, the trumpet player and vocalist. You know, in high school band, they told us you that you aren’t supposed to BLAST your horn. But the horn players would do it anyway, especially when when they were having fun and messing around. And they would get into trouble for it every time from our band director who was trying to teach them to play ‘properly.’ I just remember those kids and how they wanted to let those horns go all the way…they wanted to floor it. They wanted to have fun, …like Harry James Angus does.
